Leatherjacket (Crane Fly)

Crane flies resemble adult mosquitoes in the adult stage as they fly around the landscape in the late summer/early fall. Their young (called leatherjackets) begin feeding on grass roots and crowns in the fall which can lead to yellow spots, thinning and bare patches the next spring

Symptoms of a leatherjacket infestation may not become apparent until April or May when the lawn appears yellow and thin after coming out of the winter. Large numbers of the maggot-like leatherjackets sometimes appear on driveways and walkways after a warm May rainfall. By this time control is possible but lawn damage may have already occurred. Additional damage can be caused by birds as they feed on them in your lawn.

Your TruGreen specialist is trained to identify the early signs of infestation, which includes the adult crane fly flight in late summer and early fall. Our all-natural treatment uses an application of beneficial nematodes in the fall, soon after new leatherjackets have hatched, and before they have a chance to cause damage. A spring application can also be made to help reduce infestations and further damage.
